Earlier in 2009 a small group of year 10 and year 9 students attended the “Engineering Your Future” course conducted by Youth Jet. This course was spread out over the duration of one week and was designed to give participants an insight as to what it takes to be an engineer and the different career paths in engineering. Obviously the type of people that attended this course were still making a decision if they would to follow engineering as a career. During this week the group visited places such as Aurecon, Sa Water House, the desalination plant, the Northern Expressway Project and the traffic control centre.

At each of these destinations, the group was exposed to real engineers who explained what was involved and what it took to be an engineer. This helped to give people a more informed decision as to their career choice. As well as great food and facilities, the week gave an invaluable and hands on insight as to engineering which was extremely fun! The week was not designed to give people an engineering course nor was it designed to brainwash people into choosing engineering. The focus of the week was to help give people an informed decision to choose if engineering was right for them.

Engineering Your Future participant.

CBC speech night 2009 was another great sucess. The school in it’s 131st year put on a great display of talents and awards of the students that attend Christian Brothers College. The speech night is held annually and showcases many talents and outlines the year’s sucess.

Overall it was a great night  and definately one to be remembered, dispite the college captain; Kiren Kierns being sick with appendicitis.

In 1978 a football match between Rostrevor and CBC 1st XVIII was played to commemorate the Centenary of Christian Brothers College. This match was said to be bigger and better than the grand final, which CBC proved to be victorious in. From this match, two special guernseys were donated, one from Tony Egan, who made the first’s in 1979. The second Guernsey was donated by Chris Powell, who played in 1978 and went on the become the Port Adelaide Magpies under 19′s best and fairest in 1981.

I believe that these old scholars should be sincerely thanked for their contribution to the College history these donations of memorabilia are what the archives depend on, and without them there would be no history to look back on.

Lately many asylum seekers have reached australian waters which have put customs and autrorities in a difficult position. The asylum seekers have come from war ravaged countires where most of them have nothing but the clothes they are in. These people have been forced out of thier homes and had thier families killed infront of them, yet our government refuses to help. It is not up to the people to decide what to do, that is the Government’s job. Truthfully I would not have the slightest idea what to do but the Government should, after all they do get paid to fix these problems.

If you are one of the people that simply say “why dont they just go back where they came from?” Then put yourself in an asylum seeker’s shoes (which usually do not exist) and think of what you would do. Please leave your comments and explain what your decisions would be.

Sean Mcarthy was a 25 year old Australian soldier that was deployed to Afganistan and served with the Special Air Service Regement. He was carrying out operations in the Oruzgan Province when he was killed while patrolling. Signaller Mcarthy was regarded as one of the most experienced and outgoing and knowledgeable soldiers by his Commanding Officers, comrades, family and friends. The details of his death are unknown by the public, and his body has been returned home to Ausrtalia via a RAAF C130 Plane.

I believe that Signaller Mcarthy was indeed a corageous man as are all of our Australian soldiers and he was in amongst the most highly regarded special forces teams in the world. It is unclear why he has died, but in a high risk combat environment  it is hard to stay alive as the level of alertness must be 100% all of the time and there is no margin for error.
